About Barnes & Maracle
Sarah Barnes
Sarah's culinary journey began in the heart of Cowichan Valley, where she learned the art of cooking from her mom, aunt, and grandmother. Her grandmother's wisdom of always having a generous meal ready, welcoming unexpected guests with an open door, remains a guiding philosophy in Sarah's life.
At just 14, Sarah embarked on her first professional cooking adventure aboard her father's commercial fishing boat. Her passion for food led her to open NOW restaurant in 2010, a vibrant spot known for its spicy noodles and delectable bites. Following the closure of NOW, Sarah returned to her mentor Fatima Da Silva at Vinoteca on Zanatta Vineyard.
The years spent alongside Fatima, savouring her exquisite cuisine and embracing her generosity, have shaped Sarah's culinary journey. With 15 years of wining and dining in the Cowichan Valley, Sarah's love for food is a timeless and enduring passion.
Star Maracle
Star's journey began on a sun-soaked fruit farm in Southern Ontario, where she savoured peaches warmed by the sun. Her passion for fine dining was ignited by her aunt, introducing her to frog legs and escargot in opulent French restaurants from an early age.
Starting as a prep cook at the age of 15, Star swiftly ascended the restaurant ranks, earning her Red Seal Chef certification. Driven by a sense of adventure, she ventured to Austria, where she apprenticed on a sheep farm, honing her skills in cheese and cured meats production. Along the way, she collaborated with local farmers, even lending a hand in goat milking for Haltwhistle cheese and aiding friends in building their culinary ventures.
Complementing her culinary expertise, Star boasts comprehensive wine knowledge, having achieved her level 3 WSET certification and serving as the Wine Director at Cabana Bar and Grille in Kelowna. With this wealth of knowledge, Star is the perfect consultant to turn to when seeking expert wine pairings for your event.
